How to use pastel color palettes

Pastel palettes use light tints and restrained saturation to create a calm, friendly visual tone. Use the palest color as a background, a clearer mid-tone for larger interface elements, and the strongest shade for buttons or small accents.

Pastels can lose readability when text and background colors are too similar. Pair them with charcoal, navy, or another deep neutral for body text, and check contrast before using pastel text on white.

Pastel palette questions

What colors are considered pastel?

Pastels are light tints of colors such as pink, blue, green, yellow, peach, and lavender. They contain enough white or lightness to feel soft rather than vivid.

What dark color works with pastel palettes?

Charcoal, deep navy, forest green, and plum can provide readable contrast while preserving a softer mood than pure black.
